Boric Acid is a weak acid of boron often used as an antiseptic, insecticide, flame retardant, neutron absorber, or precursor to other chemical compounds. It exists in the form of colorless crystals or a white powder that dissolves in water. Boric acid is poisonous if taken internally or inhaled in large quantities. It can be used as an antiseptic, as a vaginal douche to treat bacterial vaginosis due to excessive alkalinity, an insecticide, as a preservative for wood, and in pyrotechnics to neutralize alkaline amides that can react with the aluminum.
